commitment being made to look after employees\u2019 mental health and wellbeing.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1452198c href=\"https:\/\/www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au\/safety-topic\/managing-health-and-safety\/mental-health\/psychosocial-hazards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Work Health and Safety Act to manage psychosocial hazards<\/span><\/a> in the workplace.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5db50470 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5db50470\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What are psychosocial hazards?\u00a0<\/h2><p>What these hazards look like varies from workplace to workplace, though key areas of focus tend to be the quality and responsiveness of leaders, job size, clarity, security and expectations, team and relationships, and self-care.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Stressors such as unrealistic deadlines, poor support, inadequate recognition, as well as traumatic events and material you may encounter at work, are now expected to be better managed by employers, rather than having to be shouldered by employees.\u00a0<\/p><p>Employees should expect a genuine, comprehensive and holistic approach when issues arise, says our CEO, Elisabeth Shaw. \u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cAnd more importantly, employers should anticipate and plan for events or circumstances that could compromise workers,\u201d says Elisabeth. \u201cSignificant community events, such as floods, are also times when organisations should Despite an increased workload due to staff lay-offs, Jess has not had a pay rise or any acknowledgment of her greater responsibility. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Having picked up the workload of past employees, Jess feels overworked and unappreciated. A workplace that manages psychosocial hazards well tends to have clear roles, reasonable workloads, understood expectations, regular performance reviews and remuneration covered.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Employees should feel safe in their workplace, both from a physical standpoint and a mental health perspective \u2013 free from harassment, bullying, aggression or intimidation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Employee assistance programs (EAP) also have a place in ensuring employees have an outlet to talk about their stressors in a confidential setting. An EAP enables staff to access counselling for free and not have to face the long queues associated with other mental health services.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6c6a28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a6c6a28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Putting the intent into action\u00a0<\/h2><p>Actions speak louder than words, as the saying goes, so while it\u2019s a great step for a workplace to have an EAP program, it won\u2019t have a great uptake if management covertly discourages use of it or doesn\u2019t promote the service.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Equally, a leader who is vocal about the importance of employee care but who has bullying tactics behind closed doors won\u2019t do much for the cause.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cAn organisation\u2019s culture and safety will be harmed if things are said but not done; where there is open hypocrisy in messaging and action,\u201d says Elisabeth. \u201cThis leads to low trust, cynicism and disengagement.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThere needs to be clear expectations about workplace culture, relationships and behaviours from the top, with clear messaging about the care and safety of the employees, encouraging a culture of speaking up,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e9f128a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e9f128a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Understanding workplace culture\u00a0<\/h2><p>\u201cResearch shows that many people will turn to colleagues rather than an EAP or HR when struggling with mental health issues,\u201d says Elisabeth. \u201cSo this means investment in the so-called \u2018soft\u2019 skills of effective people leadership, valuing and fostering good team connections, and making sure that unproductive or destructive workplace behaviours or hazards are managed.\u201d<\/p><p>Being aware of workplace culture is an important part of managing psychosocial hazards, as employee unhappiness can spread. Understanding team dynamics and being aware of any issues can reduce the impact of interpersonal conflict, which is a common psychosocial hazard.\u00a0<\/p><p>Regularly communicating with employees is another way an employer can be aware of any issues and also foster a greater openness across the organisation. Asking for employee input is a great way for management to get ideas for how they can keep workers happy, and also serves to make employees feel heard and therefore valuable.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17ae9e1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"17ae9e1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>How training programs can help\u00a0<\/h2><p>Training can also play a critical role in reducing psychosocial hazards at work by equipping employees with skills to address complex interpersonal challenges and emotional distress in the workplace. Programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relationshipsnsw.org.au\/professional-training\/accidental-counsellor\/\">Accidental Counsellor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relationshipsnsw.org.au\/professional-training\/accidental-mediator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accidental Mediator<\/a> provide practical techniques for managing difficult conversations, recognising signs of stress, and supporting colleagues through conflict.\u00a0<\/p><p>By fostering empathy and enhancing communication, training programs like these can create a more resilient and supportive work environment, helping to prevent conflicts and reduce stressors before they escalate into serious issues.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0845d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0845d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Individual responsibilities\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>While this new code puts more responsibility on management, Elisabeth says it shouldn\u2019t be one-sided.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to note that all employees also have a responsibility to look after and keep themselves safe,\u201d says Elisabeth. \u201cIf we hand over responsibility to our employer, it can breed helplessness. We need to be alert to how we are individually travelling in relation to exhaustion, mood, morale and have a plan for self-care.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking up when things at work are not ideal \u2013 rather than starting to ignore or overlook issues \u2013 is also key to being responsible for your workplace wellbeing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless you see yourself as part of the equation, you are at risk of resentment and [end up] even leaving,\u201d says Elisabeth. \u201cIf you recognise workplaces are made up of people and therefore collective action, then the possibility of change may still be within reach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
