As we start to see the campaign for the Voice referendum gather momentum, there are a lot of Australian voters with genuine questions, trying to understand the proposal and wade through the information \u2013 including misinformation and active (that is, intentional) disinformation<\/a> \u2013 that is out there in this public debate.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This type of information can<\/a> manipulate people\u2019s understanding of the issues, distort their vote and the result. It can also cause enormous harm<\/a> to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.<\/p>

Those looking for answers that avoid misinformation and disinformation often \u2013 with good reason \u2013 turn to experts. And there are lots stepping up and trying to help, including those writing for The Conversation<\/a>, and most recently @ReferendumQandA<\/a>, a group of public, human rights and international lawyers answering common questions as the referendum approaches. When you read this information, you should always be wary of people speaking outside of their expertise and experience, and anonymous accounts where these points can\u2019t be checked.<\/p>

With that in mind, we are a group of three non-Indigenous and Indigenous academics, providing our answers to ten key questions arising in the Voice debate, where the answers are often confused and distorted by misinformation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

1. Do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people support the Voice?<\/h2>\n\n

While there is not a single view<\/a> among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, there is significant \u2013 indeed extraordinary \u2013 levels of support among them for the Voice.<\/p>\n\n

First, Indigenous support is demonstrated by the deliberative processes that sits behind the Uluru Statement from the Heart<\/a>. This involved more than 1,200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across the country (the claim that non-Indigenous people attended the dialogues is false). <\/p>\n\n

From this process, delegates were able to arrive at a national consensus position, prioritising the reforms of Voice, towards Makarrata (Treaty<\/a> and Truth<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

Second, polling confirms the Voice continues to receive overwhelming<\/a> Indigenous support. Two polls from 2023 confirm that 80% and 83% of Indigenous people support the Voice. <\/p>\n\n

Further, Indigenous organisations across the country have indicated their support for the Voice. This includes land-based representative bodies such as the Northern Territory Land Councils<\/a> and the Kimberley Land Council<\/a>, and peak service organisations such as the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
