Kidspace is an 8 session group for 5 to 12 year olds who have experienced violence in their families. Parents and children will be guided to improve communication, minimise conflict and build stronger relationships through discussion, games and activities designed to encourage support and cooperation. Families also benefit from meeting and engaging with other families who are experiencing similar challenges.

Who is it for?

The group sessions and activities are kid friendly meaning that they are fun, inclusive and safe. The development of this environment and space is primary before any other results are achieved. Furthermore a cooperative relationship between the group and the non-offending-partners is crucial in ensuring continued involvement of the parents and the children in this program.

What will it be like?

It is common for children to experience some initial anxiety over the prospect of participating in a group, and don’t know what to expect. Being in a group offers a safe, supportive environment where children complete interesting exercises and activities that build their confidence and ideas, and learn from others experiencing similar challenges. Group participants say they feel less alone, isolated and judged, and that groups help in finding new solutions to dilemmas or problems.

Our groups typically have 8 participants. The group facilitators provide fun activities and exercises, create discussion and allow for self-reflection, goal setting and learning new skills. You will experience a positive, practical approach that builds on strengths within yourself and in your relationships.
